Dryer Booster Fans

What is a dryer booster fan and when is it required?

A dryer booster fan is an auxiliary exhaust fan installed within a dryer vent system to increase airflow. It is required when the duct length exceeds the dryer manufacturer’s recommendations or contains multiple bends that restrict exhaust velocity.

The benefits of installing a dryer booster fan include:

  • Faster drying times: Increased airflow significantly reduces the time it takes for clothes to dry.

  • Improved efficiency: Reduces the workload on your dryer, lowering energy consumption per load.

  • Reduced wear and tear: Eliminates the extra strain caused by pushing air through long or restricted ducts, extending the lifespan of the appliance.

  • Improved safety: Maintains proper exhaust velocity to safely move moisture and prevent the dangerous lint accumulation that causes dryer fires.

  • Prevent ceiling leaks and water damage: Proper exhaust velocity stops warm, moist air from cooling and condensing inside the ductwork before it reaches the outside. This prevents water from pooling inside the pipe and eventually leaking through your ceiling or drywall.

Dryer Lint Boxes

Why do I need a secondary dryer lint box?

A secondary dryer lint box is an inline trap installed between your dryer and the main exhaust vent to capture excess lint. It prevents debris from clogging the ductwork or damaging your booster fan, which eliminates severe fire hazards and maintains maximum exhaust efficiency.

The benefits of installing a secondary lint box include:

  • Improved safety: Captures lint before it enters the main vent line, drastically reducing the risk of a dryer duct fire.

  • Energy savings: Unobstructed ductwork allows the dryer to operate at peak efficiency, lowering power consumption per load.

  • Extended equipment lifespan: Reduces mechanical strain on both your dryer and your booster fan by preventing restrictive clogs.

Our Equipment Preference: We primarily install the Ecco dryer lint box for its space-saving design and ease of maintenance. If an Ecco unit does not fit your specific layout, we can install traditional lint boxes to ensure your system is fully protected.

Flappers and Screens

Should I install a screen or a flapper on my exterior dryer vent?

You should use a flapper instead of a screen on an exterior dryer exhaust. Screens trap lint and severely restrict airflow. Flappers operate dynamically, opening to allow lint and exhaust to escape freely while sealing shut when the dryer is off.

The advantages of installing a flapper include:

  • Maximum airflow: Flappers open fully during operation, preventing lint blockages that reduce dryer efficiency and damage equipment.

  • Pest prevention: A properly installed flapper creates a secure, mechanical seal against birds, rodents, and insects.

  • Lower maintenance: Screens require constant cleaning to prevent complete exhaust blockage. Flappers naturally clear debris through exhaust pressure.

  • Weather protection: Flappers tightly seal the ductwork from rain, snow, and wind drafts when the appliance is not in use.
